2007Class AA: West Genesee 42, Monroe-Woodbury 21Tim Moran threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns as the Wildcats rolled up 494 total yards. West Genesee allowed the game's first score but moved out to a 28-7 lead in the second quarter and scored touchdowns on six of its first eight possessions.Ben Waldron scored on three short runs for the winners. The loss was just the second in 38 games for Monroe-Woodbury, which got scoring runs of 1 and 15 yards from Dan Scalo.

Youngs ran for 156 yards to end his career with 5,404 yards. It was Aquinas' fourth NYSPHSAA championship.

2006Class AA: Auburn 27, Monroe-Woodbury 26 (ot)Darnell Murphy’s 20-yard TD pass and a penalty against Monroe-Woodbury on the extra point try gave a three-loss Auburn team the victory before the first Carrier Dome crowd to extend to behind the end zones.Monroe-Woodbury scored on its OT possession when Dave Landesberg ran in from two yards out, but the extra-point kick failed. Murphy then connected with Jeff Richardson in the end zone on the first play of Auburn’s possession. Matt Hoey missed the extra point but a roughing the kicker penalty gave him a second chance. He made the kick to win the game. Monroe-Woodbury’s Mike Rumler recovered a fumble with 1:48 to go, and QB Greg Sullivan ran 22 yards to tie the game and set up the overtime. Flory ran for all but five yards of a 11-play, 66-yard drive and added a two-point conversion to give the Trojans a 21-14 lead in the fourth quarter. He also gained the last 41 yards of a four-play, 54-yard drive to close out the scoring.Flory scored from a yard out to cap a seven-play, 67-yard drive midway through the first quarter, but Karl Van Wygerden ran back the kickoff 95 yards to tie the game. Class B: Geneva 33, Albany Academy 7Brian Fowler rushed for 102 first-half yards and 139 for the game on 26 carries to go along with three touchdowns.Fowler scored on second-quarter runs of 32 and 12 yards that gave Geneva a 20-7 lead. Albany Academy scored first on a 1-yard run by Dion Lewis (16 carries, 75 yards) early in the first quarter, but Geneva's Bobby Martin hit Tremaine Green with a 34-yard pass midway through the first quarter. Class C: Dobbs Ferry 24, Falconer 0Frank Scattaretico ran for two touchdowns and Trevor Saunders passed for another to lead Dobbs Ferry to its third state title in five years.With the first quarter winding down, Saunders hit Kadeem Scott for a 63-yard gain to set up Scattaretico's 11-yard scoring run on the next play. Andy Saff made 16 tackles in a losing effort. Class D: Tuckahoe 27, Oakfield-Alabama 14QB Joseph Melendez ran for two TDs and caught another on a halfback option to lead Tuckahoe to its first championship. Melendez (14-for-20, 119 yards) scored on 1- and 2-yard runs and caught an 8-yard pass from Lowell Robinson, all in the first half.Robinson rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown for the Tigers and intercepted a pass in the end zone in the final seconds to wrap up the win. O-A pulled to within 21-14 on a 73-yard pass from Jason Kirkum to Tucker Smart with 6:11 left, but Robinson’s 14-yard scoring run with 1:02 to play restored the two-score lead. Tuckahoe held a 21-9 margin in first downs and rolled up 30:25 in time of possession. 2005Class AA: Monroe-Woodbury 32, Webster Thomas 10Greg Sullivan threw for three TDs and Chris Johnson scored twice, including a 92-yard kickoff return as the Crusaders rolled to the championship.The Titans drove 60 yards for a TD on QB Robbie Brown's 4-yard run on their opening possession before Johnson's return cut the margin to 7-6. Sullivan finished 11-for-15 for 169 yards. He threw a 3-yard pass to Johnson and 31-yard strike to Mike Septh to put Monroe-Woodbury up 18-7 with 8:10 to go in the first half. Class A: Amsterdam 35, Geneva 14T.J. Czeski (9-for-14) threw for 119 yards and two TDs and also picked up 81 yards on the ground in the triumph. His scoring throws to Vinny Vendetta built a 14-7 halftime lead.Tailback Tom McDermott (15 carries, 148 yards) score on runs of 2, 3 and 52 yards in the second half. Geneva QB Jeff McNamara was 15 of 25 for 170 yards but was intercepted three times in the fourth quarter, each setting up an Amsterdam score. Brian Fowler rushed 12 times for 89 yards in the loss. Class B: Rye 28, Chenango Forks 7The Garnets avenged two state-final, shutout losses to the Blue Devils. snapping Chenango Forks' 38-game winning streak.Quarterback Jack Donnelly left with an ankle injury late in the third quarter but returned to put the game away early in the fourth by throwing a TD pass, his second of the game, to Tim Monaghan to make the score 21-7. Peter Niehaus completed a seven-play, 50-yard drive with a 20-yard scoring run with 4:54 to go. Donnelly was 5-for-8 for 50 yards and the two scores. He finished the season with 14 touchdown passes and just one interception. Rye held a 19-7 advantage in first downs and controlled the ball for 28:58 as David Telesco rushed 20 times for 110 yards. Class C: Sidney 48, Dobbs Ferry 21Senior Aaron Zurn accumulated 379 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns to snap defending champion Dobbs Ferry's 24-game winning streak.Zurn’s output included 177 yards on the ground, 94 receiving, 49 on an interception return, 37 in punt and kick returns and a 22-yard touchdown pass. The interception return went for a TD that made the score 48-15 in the fourth quarter. Senior Kyle Morenus completed 10 of 15 passes for 233 yards and three TDs (giving him 33 for the season), and Pat Simonds made five catches for 113 yards. Class D: Randolph 35, Cambridge 6Fullback Jeff Durow ran 25 times for 123 yards and three TDs to help the Cardinals pull away after a scoreless first quarter.Nich Jackson added 20 carres for 125 yards in the victory, and Trae Rogers threw TD passes of 23 and 25 yards to Blake Morrison in his only two attempts of the game. 2004Class AA: Syracuse CBA 41, New Rochelle 35Gatorade national player of the year Greg Paulus went 23-of-29 for 371 yards and three touchdowns, rallying the Brothers from a 35-28 deficit in the fourth quarter.All three of Paulus' TD throws were to Bruce Williams, who had 130 yards on 11 receptions to help offset the heroics of the Huguenots' Ray Rice (20 carries, 115 yards and three TDs) in a game that featured 940 yards of total offense. Two Rice TDs staked New Rochelle to a 21-14 halftime lead, and he scored again on the first possession of the third quarter to make it 28-14. CBA tied on a 4-yard run by Brian Bojko and a 23-yard pass from Paulus to Williams, but Geoff McDermott (262 passing yards) quickly responded with a 74-yard scoring strike to Greg Davis. Paulus answered with another 23-yard TD throw to Williams (who also made 13 tackles and intercepted a pass), and Lavar Lobdell closed out the scoring with a 27-yard run on CBA's next possession.
Class A: Maine-Endwell 39, Wallkill 36A defensive holding penalty on fourth down gave Maine-Endwell new life, and Shane Connolly hit Shawn Fitchpatrick for 16 yards and the winning TD with 19 seconds to go. It capped a nine-play, 68-yard drive.Walkill had taken a 36-32 lead on an 80-yard run by Trevor Perdrick (13 carries, 145 yards and three TDs) with under 2:30 to play in a game featuring nine lead changes and 913 yards of offense. Connolly, playing with a damaged anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, was 17-for-24 for 308 yards and three touchdowns. Walkill's J.J. Maloney carried 18 times for 111 yards before leaving with a sprained ankle with M-E leading by 25-23.
Class B: Chenango Forks 48, Rye 0Senior quarterback Tim Batty ran for three touchdowns to lead the defending state Class B champions to a rout to open the weekend's schedule of championship games.It was the 26th straight win for the Blue Devils. Batty, repeating as offensive MVP in the state Class B final, ran 10 times for 87 yards, scoring on runs of 1, 51 and 13 yards. He also went 2-for-5 passing for 70 yards and kicked six extra points.
Class C: Dobbs Ferry 14, LeRoy 6Dan Juvan threw for 113 yards and a touchdown to down the Oatkan Knights and earn MVP honors in a game of sustained drives but little scoring.Juvan's 4-yard TD run capped a 13-play, 81-yard possession that ended early in the second quarter. He carried 13 times for 47 tards. Dobbs Ferry led 14-0 at the half, and the teams chewed up almost the entire third quarter on long drives that didn't produce points, with the Eagles covering 54 yards in 13 plays and then LeROy going 17 plays in eight minutes. LeRoy finally got on the board on Mark Bennetti's 1-yard run with under 4:00 to go to cap a 13-play, 86-yard drive. LeRoy's Mike Farabella ran 24 times for 121 yards.
Class D: Weedsport 22, Tuckahoe 21Brad Bach's 83-yard kickoff return for a score and QB Mike Coolbaugh's run fr the two-point conversion early in the fourth quarter capped the Warriors' run to their first NYSPHSAA championship.Bach's return followed an Eliot Melendez TD that gave Tuckahoe a 21-14 lead. Bach rushed 16 times for 136 yards. Coolbaugh's interception at the Weedsport 7-yard-line ended one Tuckahoe threat in the fourth quarter, and Melendez was stopped short on fourth down on his team's final drive. Tuckahoe held advantages of 21-11 in first downs and 323-185 in rushing yardage, hanging on to the ball for 33:54. Axel Cortijo ran 32 times for 217 yards in a losing effort. 2003Class AA: New Rochelle 32, Webster Schroeder 6The Huguenots Courtney Greene scored two of his three touchdowns in the first half to help build an 18-0 lead and snap the Warriors' 31-game winning streak. Greene finished with 22 carries for 147 yards, and junior Ray Rice rushed 17 times for 167 yards and Tds covering 33 and 38 yards.Schroeder, hobbled by injuries, fell behind by 32-0 before scoring early in the fourth quarter and was limited to 17 rushing yards and 132 overall. Class A: Nyack 43, Corning East 0Peter Samoylo scored on a 56-yard punt return to open the scoring and added a 6-yard TD run and an 88-yard fumble return to stake the Indians to a 27-0 lead at the half. Todd Wilson also scored on a 47-yard run in the decisive first half at the Carrier Dome.Nyack had rattled off five consecutive wins to open its season before a 10-0 setback to Yorktown. The Indians then ran the table by a combined 238-52 margin over their final seven games to earn their second NYSPHSAA football championship. Class B: Chenango Forks 16, Rye 0Quarterback Tim Batty broke a scoreless tie with a 36-yard field goal with 3:04 to go in the third quarter and then added a TD pass and a short scoring run in the fourth quarter.Batty's TD pass to Zach Vrendenbaugh covered 23 yards with 8:58 to play and was his only completion in the game. Chenango Forks held a narrow 232-211 advantage in total yards and a 17-15 margin in first downs but converted 10 of 17 opportunities on third or fourth downs. Joe Babcock rushed 28 times for 108 yards in the victory. Rye QB John Niehaus was 9-for-13 for 104 yards and was intercepted once. Rye opened the game with a 61-yard drive but was stopped on downs at the Chenango Forks 19. Class C: Caledonia-Mumford 30, Hoosick Falls 26Jeremy Darron rushed 24 times for 190 yards and an 82-yard score as the Red Raiders became the first school to earn four NYSPHSAA football championships.Cal-Mum rolled up 415 yards off to offense to offset Hoosick Falls QB Chad Wysocki, who went 9-for-13 for 204 yards. His 5-yard run pulled Hoosick Falls to within 22-20 in the fourth quarter, but Paul Keeley punched in a 2-yard run and then threw the conversion pass to Jamie Fitch to stretch the advantage to 30-20. Class D: Onondaga 41, Cambridge 21The incomparable Mike Hart scored on runs of 38 yards in the second quarter and then 19, 86, 84, 26 and 29 yards after the half to carry the Tigers to their third straight championship.Hart finished his nine-game state tournament career with 266 carries for 2,372 yards and scored 208 points. Cambridge had built a 21-7 lead at the half, limiting Hart to 12 carries for 78 yards in the first 24 minutes. But the Michigan-bound senior ripped off 13 carries for 312 yards in the second half to set a single-game yardage record in the tournament that would stand until 2007. |
