2017Class AA: Troy 41, Lancaster 26Joey Ward piled up 294 total yards and scored four touchdowns to complete the Flying Horses' defense of the large-school championship. Lancaster QB Ryan Mansell hit running back Andrew Hershey on a wheel route for a TD, a Troy drive stalled and Mansell connected with Kyle Backert for a 72-yard touchdown that made it 34-26 with 4:56 left. Holmes then returned the ensuing kickoff into Legends territory to help set up a Ward 26-yard touchdown run that put the game out of reach.

Class D: Cambridge 26, Maple Grove 14Cambridge churned out a 14-play, 68-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter to cap its second straight Class D title run.The drive was the Cambridge response to a 55-yard interception return for a score by Easton Tanner that had pulled Maple Grove back into contention in its bid to avenge the previous season's double-overtime loss in the state final. Colton Dean, who ran for 79 yards and two touchdowns, scored his 15th rushing touchdown with 4:50 remaining, roaring in from the 8. The victory marked the first time that a Section 2 team went back-to-back -- a feat matched by Troy later in the weekend -- in the 25-year-old state tournament and gave Cambridge three championships overall.

2016Class AA: Troy 21, Victor 20John Germinerio overcame two early interceptions, threw for 222 yards and made the crucial tackle on a 2-point conversion attempt as Troy won the large-chool championship at the Carrier Dome.Dev Holmes scored two touchdowns and amassed 214 yards of offense, and Joey Ward ran for 92 yards and a TD, but it came down to a single play on defense after Victor's Chris Varone scored on a 7-yard run with 5:15 to play to pull the Blue Devils within 21-20. Victor coach Geoff Mandile opted play for the lead. The Blue Devils set up nearly the entire offensive line to the far right and quarterback Clay Bleier behind center between the hash marks. Bleier threw to Cordell Jackson at the sideline, but Germinerio was able to shed a block and make the stop. After that, Victor needed a defensive stop and nearly had it, too. A false start pushed Troy back to its 21 until Germinerio found Jessie Brown on a flood pass over the middle on third-and-9 for a 56-yard gain with 1:19 left. The Flying Horses took a knee three times after that to end the game.
Class A: Somers 25, Greece Athena 17Somers captured its first NYSPHSAA title, with Tony DeMatteo becoming the first coach with tournament titles at two schools, having won a Class AA title with Yonkers Roosevelt two decades ago.Senior Matt Pires had 153 yards on just nine touches, including a 45-yard touchdown catch from Kevin Olifiers from a 33-yard reverse that gave Somers a 19-10 advantage late in the third quarter. Messiah Horne added 28 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown and also scored on the game's decisive play. It came shortly after he lost a fumble at the Athena 7. The defense forced the Trojans to punt and Horne darted 40 through the coverage team for the winning touchdown. Horne's return gave Somers a 25-10 lead with 8:49 to play despite a violent collision at the goal line. The officials ruled that Horne had crossed the plane prior to the ball popping loose.
Class B: Glens Falls 47, Chenango Forks 39A wall of Glens Falls defenders collapsed on L.J. Watson inside the 1-yard line on a 2-point conversion run with :37 left, and the Indians' Andrew Murphy returned the subsequent onside kick 50 yards for a TD and the clinching points.Glens Falls scored on six of its first eight possessions, but the Blue Devils scored on five of their first seven, including a touchdown just before halftime to tie the score 27-27. "They wouldn't go away," said Aaron Sampson, who led Glens Falls with 165 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Joe Girard III, who passed to Dylan Balcom for two touchdowns and ran for two more, gave Glens Falls the lead for good at 40-33 on a 3-yard run on fourth-and-goal with 8:54 left. After an exchange of punts, Chenango Forks drove 68 yards in 12 plays -- converting two fourth downs -- on a drive capped by Cody Bogue's 16-yard TD pass to Connor Borchardt. Forks went for two and turned to Watson, who rushed for 191 yards and two scores. But the handoff wasn't clean and Watson was contained on the right sideof the line.
Class C: Newark Valley 39, Ogdensburg 34Newark Valley recovered from three giveaways in the first seven minutes to close out a perfect season.Joe Dalton completed four of five passes, the last a 10-yarder to Jackson Troiano for a TD which pulled the Devils within 36-28 after a successful 2-point conversion. But Newark Valley followed with an 80-yard drive aided by a fourth-down fake punt and two third-down conversions. A 33-yard field goal by A.J. Coleman made the lead 39-28 with 3:18 left. It was the Cardinals' first close call since a 20-12 win over Owego in the opener.
Class D: Cambridge 22, Maple Grove 21 (2 OT)Trailing by a point in the second overtime, Cambridge coach Doug Luke played for the win. Shawn Lemieux delivered it, catching the conversion pass from junior QB Zack Rowland.Said Rowland: "It may have been seconds, but in my mind it felt like forever. Once the ball left my hand, it just fell into his hands. Then we were state champs. It is amazing." Cambridge had the ball first in overtime, but Colton Dean fumbled it away without being hit and Maple Grove recovered it. Maple Grove running back Brad Benson (139 yards rushing) gained 10 yards on first down, but then QB Dalton Dubois fumbled and junior Brenden Holcomb recovered. Maple Grove's Nick Fabrizio scored on a 2-yard run to open the second OT and the Red Dragons kicked the extra point. On fourth-and-10 from the 20, Rowland threw under pressure to Holcomb over the middle for 12 yards and a fresh set of downs. On the next play, senior running back Maurice Seymore scored on a sweep to set up the decisive conversion.
2015Class AA: Aquinas 44, Saratoga 19Aquinas senior Earnest Edwards, who had started his season with four first-half touchdowns at the Carrier Dome against Syracuse CBA, repeated the feat in his farewell to swamp Saratoga for the NYSPHSAA title.A string of Edwards big plays and a 462-yard passing day by Jake Zembiec (on 18 of 23 accuracy) allowed the Little Irish to cruise to a 44-point lead and their seventh state title. Edwards scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone and three spectacular catch-and-run collaborations from Zembiec. He finished with five grabs for 286 yards plus four tackles and an interception on defense. Zembiec's 75-yarder to Edwards on the game's second play gave Aquinas the lead for good. A botched handoff that started with a Saratoga snap at its own 18 ended with Edwards falling on the ball in the end zone, then the Aquinas standout turned a catch into a 60-yard TD on the first play of the next Aquinas possession.

Bronson scored on runs of 4 and 43 yards, giving Forks the lead for good with 6:54 remaining. Tim McDonald added a 24-yard TD run for Forks, which won the fourth state title in program history.
Class D: Randolph 48, Chester 41Senior QB Bryce Morrison's fifth rushing TD of the game with :26 left capped a big Randolph comeback against for the Cardinals' third straight NYSPHSAA championship.Morrison and senior running back Devyn Nelson (25 carries, 289 yards, one TD) ran for 464 of the Cardinals' 466 yards, with the rally from the 27-6 halftime deficit officially complete when Morrison picked off Chester QB Vincent Aloi near the Cards' 20 in the waning seconds. Aloi passed for 266 of his team's 324 first-half yards as Chester scored on every possession but its final one for the 27-6 lead. The Cardinals received second-half kickoff and proceeded to score on every possession the rest of the day. Nelson took the first offensive play of the third quarter 62 yards to Chester's 15 to help set up Morrison's first TD, a 1-yard run. Morrison's scoring carried of 44, 8 and 1 yard pushed Randolph ahead 40-35 with 2:55 to go, but Aloi (23 of 40, 455 yards, 4 TDs) found Justin Feldman for a 31-yard TD play just 32 seconds later to finish off a five-play drive. Needing to go 65 yards in 1:00, Morrison got the job done in four plays -- passes of 42 and 18 yards to Derek Young, an intentional spike to stop the clock and then the QB's 5-yard TD carry.
2013Class AA: Aquinas 48, Monroe-Woodbury 13Sophomore Jake Zembiec sewed up the first of his two state player of the year honors by going 13 of 20 passing for 211 yards in the game, with three first-half touchdown passes to senior Alonzo Turney. The Little Irish took a 14-7 lead late in the first quarter as sophomore Earnest Edwards jumped the route on a Kevin Carr pass and returned the interception 60 yards for a touchdown. With M-W already under siege, Carr left with an ankle injury early in the second quarter. Sophomore Ryan O'Malley threw for 109 yards and rushed for 70 with Carr on the bench. Luch Pietropaolo ran 19 times for 86 yards, including a 1-yard run midway through the third quarter to make it 33-7 and put the game out of reach.

Class A: Queensbury 36, Williamsville North 7Queensbury struck early and rolled to its first state football championship in large part by limiting Williamsville North to 21 yards rushing on 26 attempts.Queensbury took the opening kickoff and drove 12 plays and 56 yards on the ground, using six backs to carry the ball. Game MVP Chris Goudy (11 carries, 81 yards) carried for the TD on a 1-yard run. Queensbury then forced a three-and-out, and Kody Bruno raced in to block Chad Steinwachs' punt. Erik Wettersten snared it on a bounce and ran 14 yards for a TD and a 14-0 lead with 5:23 left in the first quarter. Williamsville North cut the lead in half, but a fumble after a 25-yard pass play in the second quarter was recovered by Queensbury's Tim Voorhis. It set up a 64-yard drive capped by Bruno's 9-yard TD carry for a 21-7 advantage.

M-E extended its winning streak to 38 games as Kyle Gallagher threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Jake Sinicki in the closing seconds and then completed the conversion pass to Darnell Woolfork.Schalmont led 14-0 at halftime, holding M-E to two first downs and 61 yards of offense and possessing the ball for 15:26. M-E clawed its way back into the game, tying the game at 14 in the fourth quarter on Trevor Garbelman's 1-yard run with 5:56 to play. But Schalmont's Trevon Perez-Tucker returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown with 1:20 remaining to give the Sabres the lead again at 21-14. After the ensuing kickoff, three Gallagher completions and a Woolfork run put the Spartans at the Schalmont 18. On third-and-1 with :32 to go, Gallagher found Woolfork out on the flat for a first down to the 6. On third down, Gallagher completed the 5-yard TD pass to Sinicki to make it 21-20 with :04 showing, and after a timeout M-E opted to play for the win. Gallagher took the conversion snap and found Woolfork open in the end zone.
